The Laboratory of Oil and Gas Geology at the K.I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences

The Laboratory of Oil and Gas Geology at the K.I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences specializes in comprehensive studies aimed at examining geological processes related to the formation, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbon deposits. The main goal of the laboratory is to provide high-quality analytical services for the assessment and development of oil and gas fields, which contributes to the development of Kazakhstan's energy sector.
Key areas of activity:
  • Geological modeling: Development and analysis of geological models of oil and gas fields to assess their potential and predict productivity.
  • Petrographic and mineralogical analysis: Study of the composition and structure of rocks, including reservoirs and seals, to determine their properties and effectiveness.
  • Paleontological research: Study of the fauna and flora of sedimentary rocks to reconstruct the conditions of their formation and assess the age of deposits.
  • Geochemical analysis: Determining the composition of hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon components in rocks and cores to assess their oil and gas potential.
  • Geophysical research: Use of seismic, magnetic, and gravimetric surveys to study the Earth's crust structure and identify promising zones.
  • Reservoir property evaluation: Study of permeability, porosity, and other physical properties of rocks to determine their capacity to accumulate and move hydrocarbons.
Research methods: The laboratory uses a wide range of modern analysis techniques, including:
  • Optical microscopy
  • Emission spectroscopy
  • X-ray diffraction
  • Wet chemistry methods (gravimetry, complexometry, titrimetry, etc.)
  • Electron probe microanalysis
  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometry
  • X-ray fluorescence spectral analysis
  • Spectrophotometry
  • Thermographic analysis
  • Petrophysical analysis of cores and sludges
  • Palynological analysis
  • Microfaunal analysis
Materials and products analyzed: The laboratory conducts research on various materials, including:
  • Ores: polymetallic, rare metal, base metals
  • Minerals and micro-mineral inclusions
  • Concentrates of noble, non-ferrous, black, and rare metals
  • Technological by-products, tailings, etc.
  • Rocks
  • Non-ferrous metals and alloys, scrap and waste of non-ferrous metals
  • Steels, cast iron, scrap, and waste of ferrous metals
  • Ferroalloys
  • Soils
  • Gravel, construction sand
  • Portland cement, refractory materials, and products
Collaboration and services: The laboratory actively collaborates with various scientific and industrial organizations, providing services for the analysis and research of materials, and also participates in inter-laboratory experiments for certification analysis of standard substance samples.
The activities of the Laboratory of Oil and Gas Geology play a crucial role in the scientific work of the K.I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences, contributing to the development of geological research and the effective use of the country’s mineral resources.
