The Museum of the K.I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences
The Geological Research Museum of the K.I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences in Almaty is a stunningly beautiful and invaluable world of stones. The museum was founded in 1942 through the initiative and direct involvement of academician K.I. Satpaev, an outstanding organizer of science, leader in metallogeny, and prominent public and political figure. In creating this truly unique repository of Kazakhstan’s mineral wealth, Kanysh Imantayevich foresaw the scientific significance and practical importance of collecting and preserving reference samples of ores and minerals from sites that were disappearing due to industrial development in the country’s subsoil. Today, the Geological Research Museum of the K.I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences is one of the world’s renowned collections and the only one where reference samples of stone materials, reflecting the geological structure and typical deposits of Kazakhstan, are most comprehensively and systematically represented. The exhibition spans an area of 1000 m² and contains over 60,000 reference specimens. The scientifically organized exhibition of the museum is presented in sections: introductory, geological structure, paleontology, mineralogy, and the largest section, mineral resources. Each of these sections features a complete set of scientifically organized monographic collections.
